Accelerated Technology Adds Embedded Development Environment and Debugger Support for Tensilica's Xtensa Processors

MOBILE, Ala. and SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 2001--Accelerated Technology, Inc. (ATI), the leader of source code and non-royalty based real-time operating system (RTOS) software, and Tensilica® Inc., the leading supplier of configurable processor cores for embedded system-on-chip (SOC) applications, today jointly announced extended Nucleus support for SOC developers using the Xtensa® processor. In addition to the Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel, the Xtensa processor now includes support for Nucleus EDE, an embedded development environment, and Nucleus UDB, a multitasking debugger.

The Xtensa processor architecture allows SOC developers to uniquely define each configuration to accelerate their application code. This results in designs that are higher in performance and lower in power and cost, compared to those based on traditional fixed architecture CPUs and DSPs. Automatic configuration of the companion software development tools has always been a hallmark of the Xtensa processor. That automatic support has now been extended to Nucleus EDE and Nucleus UDB. This means developers can now get all the benefits of an application optimized processor fully supported in ATI's Nucleus EDE development environment with multitasking debugger support from Nucleus UDB.

The combination of Nucleus and the Xtensa processor will provide SOC developers with the most complete embedded environment that can be uniquely tailored to the requirements of high volume applications like datacom and telecom protocol processing, digital cameras, office automation products, and wireless communications devices.

``We have seen a steady evolution in the way our customers build embedded systems over the years,'' said Neil Henderson, president of Accelerated Technology, Inc. Standard off-the-shelf CPUs are not meeting the needs of many integrators that are providing single chip solutions for application specific domains. Tensilica has been a pioneer in bringing a greater level of flexibility to these designs. Our involvement with SOC development has been intensive and is continually increasing as our number one target market. The implementation of Nucleus EDE and Nucleus UDB brings a more commercialized development environment to the Tensilica solution expanding both our opportunities to service the needs in this space. Our mutual customers now have the benefits of an easy to use and comprehensive software development environment for the customizable IP services that Tensilica provides. We are excited about the benefits this combination brings to our customers. They will be able to get to market more quickly and easily,`` Henderson said.

``The close collaboration of Tensilica and ATI has been providing customers with fully automated support of Nucleus PLUS on configured Xtensa-based SOC designs for over a year,'' said Chris Rowen, president and CEO of Tensilica Inc. ``We are delighted to expand our partnership to deliver enhanced development and debug environments around Nucleus PLUS. Nucleus UDB and Nucleus EDE enable faster development and more complete optimization for systems built with our configurable processors.''

Pricing and Availability

Licenses for Nucleus EDE begin at $695 per seat and licenses for Nucleus UDB begin at $2,495 per seat.

Tensilica's pricing structure is based on a licensing fee per design instance plus royalties based upon volume of processors manufactured. Contact Tensilica for pricing information.
